Selling out Canada

As some of you may know, Canada is in the process of aligning its policies with those of the USA. Very quietly. Without public debate. [...] President Bush is arriving in Montebello, Quebec this Summer -- August 19-21st -- meeting with Calderon, Harper and the 30 CEOs for the next stage in this integration. If this matters to you, join the demonstrations in your city (1:00 pm at City Hall, Ottawa, Sunday 19th August) or at Montebello 19-21st. We need to consider these events, and their effects for future generations.

If this is all conspiracy theory, the government has already spent a few hundred million dollars on a 'conspiracy.'

The Late Great American Melting Pot

A lot of the time I wish my government, the American government, would just wake up out of its funk and start doing the right thing for its citizens. Everyday I hear about some scandal involving a government official, mud-slinging among presidential candidates, illegal immigrants standing up for their “rights” (excuse me?) and their supporters doing the same.

It’s a downward spiral we’re in. And the sad thing is, apparently there are few leaders willing to do anything about it. Oh sure, they claim they’re doing what’s right for America, but honestly, how is giving amnesty to illegal immigrants going to help Americans? They don’t call it that, of course, but they sugarcoat it and hope people won’t notice what they’re swallowing. [...] Having a unified currency among several countries has more disadvantages than advantages. It means that the member countries can’t solve their economic problems by adjusting their money supply or stimulate its growth. Instead, they must go with the flow, do what the other members are doing even when it’s not really helping.

I have nothing against our neighboring countries, but they should know this can adversely affect them as well because it will dilute their individuality the same as it would for America. America’s identity, its sovereignty, its cultural heritage and pride would simply fade away. So, too, will Canada and Mexico.

Gone are the days of us being known as the Great American Melting Pot. Instead, we are fast becoming a nation of “mini-nations”, each seeking their own agenda at the detriment of the greater good.

Going protectionist over the constitution

The U.S. is known for its "paranoid style" of politics, so brace yourself for the next Big Scare coming down the pike (literally) -- the Trans-Texas Corridor. Isolationist conservatives, emboldened by their jihad last year against the Dubai Ports World deal, have identified this road project as the spearhead of a conspiracy to dissolve the United States of America. [...] Even Texas Rep. Ron Paul, a libertarian Republican candidate for president, has fallen for the paranoia. You'd think that Paul would be chanting hosannas to anything that facilitates free trade, but he too fears that the "superhighway" is part of a scheme by foreign companies to erode U.S. borders and create a North American Union combining the United States, Mexico and Canada -- complete with a single government and a common currency called the "amero."

Superhighway opponents regard even routine dialogue between the three neighbors as a treasonous assault on U.S. sovereignty. They are apoplectic about the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP), a forum created in 2005 for bureaucrats to discuss such radical topics as how to snag terrorists before they enter the continent and how to speed up cross-border traffic for just-in-time deliveries.

All of this could be dismissed as the paranoid rantings of a protectionist fringe -- except that it is beginning to have a tangible negative effect on public policy. [...] But the impact of today's isolationists threatens to affect the entire economy. If unchallenged, these ideologues of fear will kill the United States' prosperity in the name of protecting its sovereignty.

Bet your bottom amero that U.S. sovereignty is safe

The John Birch Society staked out some turf in downtown Seattle last Saturday, holding flags and carrying signs. The signs read, "Preserve the Traditional Farm," "Stop Benefits to Illegal Aliens," "Keep America Sovereign" — and a curious one, a slash through the initials "NAU."

[...] The U.S. government has a Web site, www.spp.gov, in which it says that "in no way, shape or form" does it plan "the creation of a European Union-like structure" in North America. That appears to be so — but denials don't matter to a certain type of mind, which assumes that appearances are false and truth is concealed.

[...] The Birchers might have an argument if they said NAFTA could, over a long time, prepare the American mind for continental government. It would be something to think about. But it would not be potent enough to bring out protesters on a Saturday afternoon.

So they overreach. They warn of such fantasies as the replacement of the U.S. dollar by a new currency called the amero. No politician proposes this. A professor of economics at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver published "The Case for the Amero" in 1999. But it was one book, and the Canadian dollar was below 70 cents at the time. The loonie has since revived, and the Canadians are not about to discard it.

Sovereignty, for the moment, is safe.

In a foreword for Grubel's study on the prospect, Gordon Gibson characterizes the situation as such:

"Most fundamentally however, Mr. Grubel makes the sensible observation that "sovereignty is not infinitely valuable." Every nation in the world, even the mighty United States, has traded off elements of sovereignty to multi-national associations such as the WTO, NAFTA, and the United Nations. Canada has been in the forefront of encouraging every such development--a natural policy for a middle power."
